About Maine Maritime Museum Discovery Boatbuilding Program

The Discovery Boat Building Program began in 1994 as a collaboration between South Bristol Elementary School and Maine Maritime Museum. The program now includes elements of history and science which further strengthen the student experience. During the course of the year the students face new challenges and meet them head on, gaining not only more responsibility but a greater sense of pride in the work they accomplish. The students learn about teamwork, problem-solving, how to successfully communicate with one another and self-direction. The program not only teaches them how to use tools to build a boat, but gives them the tools to build a successful future.
