About WoodenBoat School

Created in 1981 as an extension of WoodenBoat magazine, WoodenBoat School reaches an exciting milestone this summer as it celebrates 30 years in the field of education. Throughout the past three decades of continued growth and development, the school has welcomed thousands of students of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience from the world over to its 60-acre campus in Brooklin, Maine, to participate in its program.

In session this year from mid-May through September, the school is, once again, offering an exciting array of over 90 courses in traditional and non-traditional boatbuilding, boat design, woodworking, bronzecasting, marine diesel systems, blacksmithing, rigging, marine surveying, marine art and photography, seamanship, and lots more. The wide variety of one- and two-week courses give ample opportunities for experience to everyone interested in the world of wooden boats - the complete amateur, the lifelong craftsman, families, artists, and those seeking a career in the marine industry.

Director Rich Hilsinger decsribes the school's environment as "a place where the pages of WoodenBoat magazine come alive. A significant key to our program's success has always been the professional faculty and staff who are more than willing to share their skills and expertise with all who are interested. The mood around our campus is one of trust and sharing, and everyone responds with genuine enthusiasm and responsibility. It is a very special place where one can learn much more than just boatbuilding or sailing. I've seen a lot of lives changed as a result of the time they've spent with us."
